"Adult Classes & Home Training"

Dr. Dunbar addresses the issues of implementing adult dog training classes.  He covers the many issues one might face as described below.

Adult I Classes are intended for quiet, people-friendly and dog-friendly dogs between 18 weeks and two years of age to learn basic manners. The syllabus for adult classes is really quite straightforward and comprises controlling the dog's energy and enthusiasm, capturing the dog's attention, and increasing the reliability of responses. Initially, adult classes must be taught on-leash (bite inhibition is unknown). Off-leash and handling exercises may be incorporated once you have had time to evaluate the dog's behavior and demeanor. All dogs should be handfed daily diet of kibble prior to the first session.

Several types of dog are unsuitable for Adult Classes:

  • Barking dogs are too disruptive in class and require and individual behavior consultation to teach 'Woof'ť and 'Shush.'ť
  • Dog-human aggressive dogs are too disruptive and potential dangerous in class and require an individual behavior consultation.
  • Dog-dog aggressive dogs are too disruptive and potential dangerous in class and require an individual behavior consultation, or a specialized 'Growl Class.'ť

Adult II Classes are intended for Adult I graduates, who have proved to be quiet, people-friendly and dog-friendly to learn higher level off-leash obedience, especially including distance control, stays with heavy distractions, walking on a loose leash, heeling, placement commands ("Go to your mat and settle down"). The exercises are the same as for Puppy II, except that most of the class is taught on leash. However, selected dogs may be tried off leash when teaching emergency sits/downs. Adult II dogs must be selected before being allowed to register for K9 GAMES® classes.
